Shanghai Metro is the urban rail transit system serving Shanghai and the Shanghai metropolitan area in China. It is a member of the Community of Metros (CoMET). The first line, Shanghai Metro Line 1, officially started operation on May 28, 1993, making Shanghai the third city in mainland China and the first in the southern region to open an urban rail transit system.
